You can just try running a hybrid bar...and not smite.

When I play with Hero/Hench on my monk, I invariably find it easier to play Smiting.
I've grown to love this build:
[skill]Balthazar's Aura[/skill][skill]Auspicious Incantation[/skill][skill]Ray of Judgment[/skill][skill]Spear of Light[/skill][skill]Bane Signet[/skill][wiki]Smite Condition[/wiki][skill]Smite Hex[/skill][skill]Power Drain[/skill].
Sometimes [wiki]Castigation Signet[/wiki] instead of Bane Signet.
I rarely take a Res with henchmen, but when I do, I replace Power Drain.
It's worked well for me, but you have to take care when using Ray of Judgment, to make sure you don't disable Auspicious Incantation when you think you're going to need it. I usually take a warrior hench to cast Balthazar's Aura on. I use an enchanting weapon to get the most out of Balthazar's Aura. That's about it. It's not the "One build to rule them all"...but it works.
To be honest, as monk, I prefer to play with humans whenever possible, I prefer to play a Hybrid Build, and it's easier, and more "interesting" with humans...but when I feel the need to smite, that build does me fine.

Don't give up hope.
I finished GWEN with my Mo/E. I've smited most of the way there, until I met with a PUG (even with a guildie I went smite). I PUGed the last two missions and we easily did the 2nd last one. It took me 4 different PUGs but I finally completed GWEN (yes, I was healing both missions).
You want smiting, have smite conditions and reversal of damage.
